Get more input from the students body. Finally,

It's reflection time. Please write at least two paragraphs on the following prompts on your blog:

13. What is the most important thing you have learned this semester being on newspaper staff?
I have learned how to communicate with others. I think the only way to make a good story is with good interviews, and to get those, one has to be a good communicator. Every time I go and interview I feel more comfortable and relaxed. My communicating has become better which has made my interviews stronger. This skill is also going to help me with whatever I do in life.

14. What can you do next semester to continue your scholastic journalism career in a fulfilling and positive way?
I think I can work harder to find out what things are going on in the school and what people are interesting and worth writing about. There are lots of clubs and people that deserve a voice and I want to be able to give those people the chance to be in the paper. I hope I can write stories that will impact the school and I can leave my mark.

15. What suggestions do you have to improve any part of this class? For example, you could address editor/staff relations, editor/editor relations, staff relations with the advisor, how we can better serve our community, direct suggestions on the newspaper itself, equipment or supplies we might need, computer program instructions you need, or even stories we should cover. I am open to anything. Part of my job is to make this a positive experience, yet it is also an educational opportunity for all of you and the other part of my job is to teach you new skills.
I think that as a staff, we don't know all of each other as well as we should. We did bonding at the beginning of the year which was fun but we didn't continue and I think we kind of lost it. This lack of closeness leads to the problem of us not communicating when we need something. I think we can feel hesitant or nervous to talk to someone about issues they're having with completing an assignment. We should be as open as possible, because then it might save us from a lot of last minute "I didn't get the photos" or "I didn't get my story in". If we are honest and communicative, we could stop a lot of issues before they become worse.

D.J. Interview

Tell me about Back to the 80s
"It's your basic typical cheesy 80s movie plotline""all of the music is popular 80s music"
What's it like learning songs from the 80s
"Me personally I've known the songs as long as i can remember because my dad and i used to listen to these songs all the time, they're a little bit different because they're cut down for the show, so getting the original versions out of my head is a little bit challenging, otherwise I'm pretty familiar with them"
"Since it's a jukebox show, there's at least some kind of a  familiarity with at least some of the music from the show"
What was it like going the whole summer without rehearsing?
"Once the school year started it hit me "wow I haven't done this in a while' but we didn't do any rehearsing because we knew that some people who were lead roles last year had dropped the class to take other things, so we had to recast some of the roles with people who are in the class this year. I think we decided not to do rehearsals because there was just a different group of people and we didn't know who would be what roles"
Are you happy that you got the oppertunity to do it again?
"Mr. Bazan decided that he would take suggestions from the class for what musical we are doing. And I had seen this musical just a few years ago in Witchita Falls, and I found it on the MTI website and i brought it up to the class and they all liked the idea, so Mr. Bazan got the rights and paid for it. So I really like the show, it's a big show I've wanted to do. especially the character corey, I'm really glad I get to play Corey because, it's the first show I can really remember seeing,so it's always been a big dream role of mine considering it''s my first expereince with theatre.
How does it feel that you made it happen esesially?
"we wouldnt really be doing right now even if i hadnt brought it up bc we are doing it now mainly bc it didn't come together like we had hoped to back in the spring, so we just ended up doing the music as a preview for what's coming this year"
What's it like doing an in-class musical?
"It's very different, there's not as much time commitment considering we're doing all of the rehearsals in class" " i can focus my after school time on homework or other shows that I'm in." "It's also different since it's not every day, it's A Day B Day schedule, so it's only every other day." "Yes so i can focus on hw and everything else but no because it feels like theres always less time to do it bc we can't have any extended rehearsals if we wanted to."

Juliana Inteview

Tell me about Back to The 80s
"Itis super fun! It kind of reminds me of the movie Pretty In Pink"
"I think it's jus treally fun, energetic, and it's cliche in a cute way"
"The 80s were a really fun and bright decade so I think that is what the show encompasses"
"Last yeare verything we were wanting to do kept getting pushed back because of theatre UIL"
"We took the choreography from last year and modified it to make it more challenging because we have more time"
"We are learning about a dance of 2 a day"
What's it like doing an in-class musical
"In class it's good because we know we have a time constraint, so we're working with it instead of against it. We try to stay on task as much as we can to make it efficient"
What's it like learning songs from the 80s
"It's super fun, I love this style, it's definitly different from most musical theatre stuff. For musical theattre you usually use really good dictiona nd youre precice with what you say, but with the 80s, I sing Girls Just Want To Have fun and she kind of slurs it, so i started trying to pick up stuff like that. It doesnt need to be perfect it can be really fun. It's really fun and carefree" "You can take more liberties with the way you do stuff" "It's definitly been different but it's definitly expanded my musical repertior."
What was it like not rehearsing all summer
"We did not rehearse all summer" "It was surprising in a good way, how much we kind of picked it up right away." "I remembered the footwork it was kind of like muscle memory". "It was nice that it was still with us and we could still pick it up"
Are you glad you got to perform in the spring and continue it this fall?
"I feel like I've grown a lot personally as a performer, I'm really glad I get the oppertunity to do it again which is something you don't get a lot from performances."It's really special to me to be able to do it at th end of my sophmore yaer and then go the whole summer and see how ive changed and how i want to do it differently." "I want to see how much more confident I feel about it. I'm really excited for that aspect of it"" ifeel like i've  broken out of my shell and I will be more confident in it." "It's really a blessing for me to get to do it again".

REMINDER - Some of you are not writing enough here. A single sentence isn't enough. I expect you to expand upon your writing. If you think you have written enough, you haven't, write more. Be sure to answer WHY you think something.

Read one of the obituaries found on page B4 or B5. Read one of the longer ones. What elements make up an obituary? What kind of information is available. What thing would you expect to read in an obituary that you rarely find in on (see if you can deduce this one on your own)? Did you know that many new reporters first assignments are to write obituaries? What would you think about having to write one of these?

They gave information about their early life such as where they were born and how they grew up. They also gave information about what they like to do such as hobbies, and then gave info about the rest of their life. They didn't give any information about how they died. I did not know that reporters first assignments were to write obituaries. I think I would honestly be nervous because finding information from their loved ones must be very hard to do and to have them talk about their recently passed friend of family, would be hard for them to talk about.

Article

Throughout the past few years, Austin has been a holder of unique races and walks. Most recently The Walk for Water and the Color Run have occurred here. The Walk for Water is a walk for raising money for developing countries, while the Color Run is a colorful 5k to promote healthiness, happiness, and individuality.
The Walk for Water is a foundation that promotes the awareness of the distance children in developing countries must to walk in order to get access to clean drinkable water. The walk is a fundraiser, using the money for a clean water supply for the Songa region of Burundi, Africa. The walk took place at the Burger Center Sunday, April 27th.
Throughout the race, participants may choose to carry heavy jugs of water in honor of the developing countries.
“Bowie kids walked as a group and dispersed through the group were people carrying the jugs,” senior Emma Seal said. “When one person would get tired someone else would help them.”
The foundation’s goal is to create a clean water supply for these developing countries so they don’t have to endure the long walks.
“They said that all of the money we raised goes directly to Burundi and none of it goes to a third party”. Seal said.
Participants could walk as long as they desired, and Bowie students showed a lot of dedication.
“I believe Bowie raised the most money,” Seal said. “We walked about 4 times around and we had a huge group of people, they even recognized us for it.”
Participants were able to donate money for the cause.
“Before, during and after the walk, people would be able to donate money at designated areas.” Seal said.
Although Bowie was about the largest groups, others participated as well.
“I saw elementary schools, middle schools and high schools there.” Seal said.
Over all, it was a successful accomplishment for Bowie and its students.
The Color Run, on the other hand, is a 5k where colorful chalky paint is tossed all over the runners creating an exciting fun environment to run in. The race took place on April 19th at Bowie and its goal was to raise money for the Bowie Band.
“It was a fundraiser for the Bowie Band,” junior Jordan Dinkins said. “We are going to the UK next year. We’re performing in the New Years parade.”
This fundraiser is just one of the many fundraisers the band is doing this year to benefit their trip. The Color Run however, was a particularly special one to the students.
“We all bonded while running together,” Dinkins said. “It was an effective way to raise money for the organization while having a lot of fun”.
While the cause was important, some students ran it for the sake of having fun.
“I’m a cross country runner and I’m training for next year,” junior Emma Hull said. “I thought it would be a fun little warm-up.”
The race helps participants forget about the running and just have fun.
“It kind of sounds cheesy,” Hull said. “But in a way it made me run faster around the areas that didn’t have the color so I could get more color and get there faster.”
The Bowie band directors were the ones who got to throw the paint at the students running. This made for an exciting experience for both the students and the directors.
“They blew a whistle for us all to start, and all of the band directors started throwing the colors at us.” Hull said.

The race made for a successful fundraiser as well as a successful fun experience for students.
