CE Quiz 2.3

1. In Tuesday's paper on page A3 "Ellis Island", what do you know about Ellis Island? Would you like to visit the island? WHY or WHY NOT
I know that Ellis Island was where immigrants were taken to become citizens back in the early 1900s. I have visited the island before and it is so magnificent! I would definitely go again, there is so much history and a lot of things to learn, along with seeing the Statue of Liberty which is amazing!

2. In Tuesday's paper on page A7 "Thanks, Texas..." What points are the author trying to make about Texas? Do you agree or disagree with his perspective? WHY or WHY NOT
The author states that Texas is sacrificing their own poor people so that the poor people in New York could have free health care insurance. Basically, he is being very sarcastic towards Texas and how they are running things, and I disagree with his perspective because he is going about things the wrong way by ridiculing and being rude.

3. In Tuesday's paper on page B1 "School staff to get ...." What are your reactions to the story? Do you think the Bastrop staff should get the training? WHY or WHY NOT
I was shocked at some of the things that were happening in the Bastrop School district. I definitely think the Bastrop staff should get the training because things will only get worse if they don't work on changing the way they are doing things in the district.

4. In Wednesday's paper on page A11 "NFL not..." Do you think the concussion issue is enough to cause changes in the NFL? WHY or WHY NOT
No, because when going into the NFL, you know you are putting yourself at risk. They should make more protective head gear for people in football though for safety.

5.  In Thursday's paper on page A1 "Guards at lockup..." What should happen to guards at the facility?
I think the guards should lose their jobs. I don't agree with the way they are handling things. Using physical violence isn't going make troubled kids feel any better towards the world or improve their lives.

6.  In Thursday's paper on page A1 "Sebelien apologizes: Obama tries..." Should the computer problems plaguing the ACA be reflective on the job the President is doing as the leader of the United States? WHY or WHY NOT?
I don't think it should reflect on the job of the President, because he didn't do anything intentionally.

Conversational topics that get you excited.
2. What was one idea the writer gave in the Opinions Pieces section that you should remember as you are writing your piece?
Details draw the reader in, generalizations keep them out. Be specific.
3. List three suggestions the writer makes in the Personal Essays and Crafts section that you will use as you write.

  • Personal essays by definition contain a personal perspective. You should be there. Watch your construction. If every sentence begins "I", you need to rephrase to provide a better rhythm and pace to your piece.
  • No extra points for the number of facts you include. Academic essays contain more facts than opinions personal essays contain more opinions than facts. But ensure the facts you use are accurate. Check names, spellings, numbers. Two sources of confirmation are better than one.
  • The hook is the device you use to get your reader's attention. It's the doorway through which you  welcoming them to the piece.

Opinions Piece

The social media, including magazines, television, and celebrities, is affecting the way girls perceive beauty.  It is forced in our heads that super skinny is the only way to be truly beautiful. I don't think girls should be constantly comparing and striving to be what they are told is "beautiful", and the social media is to blame for this.

From a young age, girls start watching television shows or reading magazines that glamorize these skinny flawless women. In reality, only 5 percent of women are this type of "beauty" that girls want to be. It's sad that girls don't see that they are the true beauty. Approximately 91 percent of women are unhappy with their bodies. Girls need to realize that true beauty isn't what's on television and in magazines, that is only made to seem like it is. So many girls are feeling bad for themselves for no reason.

Another issue that comes along from this image of "beauty", is eating disorders. I think this is so sad to see happen to girls, especially young girls. I don't think people truly understand how badly this is affecting the youth and it's only going to get worse. 95 percent of women with eating disorders are between the ages 12 and 25. The way a person thinks about themselves coincides with self-esteem. A low self-esteem in young people can lead to eating disorders.

Because of these problems, I think the social media needs to focus on advertising women who aren't anorexic or size zero. Girls at a young age are fragile and are going to look up to what they see and want to be that way. I think that things will only get worse if the media doesn't change what they're doing. Showing women of all different sizes and showing that they are just as beautiful, will solve so many issues now, and for the future.

Opinions writing

1. What do you think the major differences between a hard news story and an opinions piece? Come up with at least three.
Opinions pieces don't seem to follow the pyramid like most hard news stories do.
Opinion pieces mostly show one side of the story while hard news stories show the facts from every side.
Opinions pieces are as harsh or as light as they want to be while hard news stories can't put their opinions no matter how bad something could be.
2. Why do you think there aren't very many photos on this page?
There isn't an event that has happened or photos, and it's more focussed on the opinion being given.
3. What are three topics you think would be good to write an opinions piece on?
Cafeteria food
Movie theatre food prices
Halloween costumes at school

Current Event Quiz 2.2

1. In Monday's paper the lead story on the front page was about bond supporting affordable housing. Why do you think that the city should or should not pass an additional bond this year to help build more affordable housing?
I think the city should pass an additional bond this year to help build more affordable housing because there are people who have certain conditions causing them to struggle with housing, deserve help.

2. In Monday's paper the top story in the Life and Arts section is called "It's back to the basics". Why would or would you not like to participate in an adventure race like the ones described in the story?
I would not like to participate in an adventure race like these ones because I am a super wimp. There is no way I would be able to survive in one of these races.

3. In Monday's paper, on the second page of the Life and Arts section is a regular column called "Like a Local". The main part of the story is about a woman who wrote a book. The story goes on with a list of Becky Murphy's favorite places to go in Austin. Write a short paragraph in that same style about a favorite place you like to go.
Barton Springs is a great place to have fun and relax in the summer time. Tanning, swimming, and food are all combined in this natural spring pool. It only costs 2 dollars to spend all day at the best place to cool off in Austin.

4. In Tuesday's paper, on page A8 there is a story about two Utah men who pushed an ancient rock formation off its foundation. Do you think the men should be prosecuted? WHY OR WHY NOT.
I don't think the men should be prosecuted because they didn't hurt anybody. Yes, what they did was wrong but they already lost enough by losing their boy scout leader titles.
5. In Tuesday's paper in the Business section on page B7, there is a story titled "Report: 15% of younger Americans idle. In a paragraph tell me your reactions to that story.
I found this article shocking as I started reading it because it's hard to imagine that so many young people aren't attending school or have a job. It's sad to think about. I was relieved when I saw positive quotes and ideas from people who want to help these troubled kids. I also thought it was interesting when someone said that we try not to look at the statistics because we don't want to be depressed. This is so sad but true.
6. In Wednesday's paper on the front page, there is a story title "Officer in shooting abruptly retires". Should the officer have been able to retire, and receive a full pension after the incident (please note he was able to buy additional years to get his full pension)? WHY OR WHY NOT.
I don't think he should be able to retire, and receive full pension after the incident because they don't know if he committed a crime or not.
7. In Wednesday's paper in the Metro and State section, the lead story is about a stolen laptop. Do you worry about your private information getting out to the public? WHY OR WHY NOT.
I worry sometimes because I see how easily phones, laptops, and other electronic devices are getting stolen everyday. Also, computers are getting hacked which worries me because of my family and mines safety.

Earthquake Story

Monday morning at 8:12 a.m. an earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay area where a building housing McHenry’s Auto Supply at 2342 Plum St, partially collapsed.

Two people were killed and six others injuring according to Jennifer Vu, a public information officer from the Hayward Fire Department.

“Three of the six people injured were hurt seriously enough to require hospitalization and were transported to Hayward General Hospital,” Vu said.

Hayward firefighters were brought in by using ropes to stabilize the shop, where they conducted a search finding a gas leak which they capped.

“Twenty-one fire personnel, and 12 police and 5 American Red Cross worked responded to the collapsing building,” Vu said.

Hayward resident Mike Beamer’s apartment is across the street from McHenry’s.

“I felt a rolling motion that lasted for about 30 seconds, with a big jolt coming in the middle,” Beamer said.

“I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling. I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That’s when the screaming start across the street,” Beamer said.

Some of the fire personnel, police and American Red Cross responded, arrived within four minutes of the earthquake.

“Names of the dead are being withheld pending notifications of families,” Vu said.

The epicenter of the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale according to scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Penny Gertz.

"It was under the Hayward Hill," Getz said.

The earthquake was felt from as far south as Los Angeles and even as far north as Redding.

“The quake was a strong one,” said Gertz. “it occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs under the hills.”

McHenry’s Auto Supply and the rest of the San Francisco Bay area is lucky they were helped so quickly and efficiently.

Huntington Story

On Wednesday at 10 p.m. at Beach Boulevard, her 9mm handgun shot Janice Jones in the leg when it was knocked off a sear by her dog.

The weapon discharged when it hit the floor, and the bullet shot through Jones leg and through the side of the vehicle according to California Highway Patrol Press liaison Tammy Rye.

“It could have been worse,” Rye said. “The bullet hit two inches from the gas tank.”

Jim Washington, a spokesperson for Huntington Beach Hospital, confirmed Jones was treated at the hospital but gave no additional information.

“Jones was transported to Huntington Beach Hspital via ambulance and later was transported to Irvine Medical Center,” Rye said.

Jones’ dog, a Pomeranian named Tombo, was placed in care of the Huntington Beach Animal Control officers after the discovery of abuse.

“It could have done with a little less abuse and a few more of those pork chops,” animal control officer Janet Ngo said.
